Application:
- mainly as food pigment (desserts and sweets: ice cream, candy, instant puddings and gelatin, cake mixes, pastreis, custard powder, marzipan, biscuits and cookies; baverages: soft dinks, energy and sport drinks, powered drink mixes, fruit cordials, flavored/mixed alcoholic; snacks : flavored corn chips, chewing gum, popcorn, potato chips, condiments and spreads: jam, jelly, marmalade, mustard, horseradish, pickles processed sauces; other processed foods: cereal, instant soups, rice, noodles
- liquid and soaps, moisturizers and lotions, mouth washer, perfumes toothpastes, shampoos
- eyeshadow, blush, face power, lipstick
- nail polish, nail polish remover
- temporary tattoos
- tanning lotions
- in medicine – give a yellow, orange, green hue to a liquid, capsule, pill, lotion, gel
- paper plates, pet foods, crayons, inks for writing instruments, stamp dyes, paints, glue
Daily intake: up to 7,5mg/kg body weight – according to EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)
Side effects:
- ssthmatics may also experience symptoms following consumption of tartrazine, as it is a known histamine-liberating agent
- can increase uterine contractions, threatening miscarriage in pregnant women
- people who are intolerant to salicylates (aspirin, berries, fruits)
- in combination with benzoates (E210-215), tartrazine is implicated in a large percentage of cases of ADHD syndrome (hyperactivity) in children
