Origin: Synthetic iodine-containing red dye

Application

  • food colouring (sweets, candies and popsicle, cake-decorating gels)
  • printing ink
  • biological stain
  • dental plaque disclosing agent
  • radiopaque medium
  • sensitizer for orthochromatic photographic films

Daily intake: up to 0,1 mg/kg body weight

Side effects:

  • increased hyperactivity has been reported in a few cases, as well as a possible connection with mutagenicity
  • erythrosine causes an increased photosensitivity in people with sensitivity to sunlight
  • in high concentrations erythrosine interferes with iodine metabolism.

Curiosities:

  • can be consumed by all religious groups, vegans and vegetarians
  • very soluble in water
